Growing up in Los Angeles in was magical. It wasn’t the weather, the beach, or anything else typically associated with LA. For me, it was all about the restaurants.
Walking into a restaurant in Los Angeles wasn’t just for food; it was an experience. In-between-work actors, writers, up-and-coming musicians—Los Angeles was full of them, and many were waiting tables to make ends meet.
Eating at a restaurant was like stepping onto a stage, where you and your server might engage in a conversation full of wit, humor, and charm. Like being on the business end of an audition they hadn’t landed yet. It was electric – this artist-community of people who still believed that Hollywood had a spot for them.
There was something uniquely L.A. about it—a place where every dive bar or fine dining spot could have you’re your favorite actor from your favorite show waiting on you, only neither of you knew it yet. New York City had its theater kids hustling in the same way, but outside of these two cities, you couldn’t quite find that blend of ambition, artistry, and conversation.
Things feel different now. The talent is still out here, but fewer are waiting tables. Instead, it seems like every aspiring entertainer who hasn’t caught their big break has turned to a new hustle—one that, like waiting tables, offers flexible hours but doesn’t require any real experience or training: Coaching.
Life coaches, spiritual guides, wellness mentors—they are everywhere. EVERYWHERE.
Don’t get me wrong, some of them are extraordinary. Transforming lives in ways that weren’t accessible before. But for every legitimate coach, it feels like there are at least dozen others who’ve hopped on the bandwagon, offering misguided, sometimes dangerous guidance while giving the profession a bad name.
What was once a conversation about dreams and opportunities now feels like entering the wellness sales funnel. A funnel filled with generic buzz-phrases like limiting beliefs, old programming, alignment and mother wounds.
You can’t have an authentic conversation in Los Angeles these days without someone trying to pull you into their trap of “service” and “support.”
Yes, I’ve thought about my past and whether old stories still serve me. Yes, I understand that my thoughts create my reality. And yes, I’m working through my father, mother, brother, sister wounds, just like everyone else.
And I prefer to do it without being pitched by a spiritual telemarketer hiding behind the nobility of their work to avoid facing the things they refuse to look at in themselves.
I miss the old days, when the only thing a stranger wanted was for you to enjoy your meal and leave a solid tip. When conversations felt like part of the fabric of the city, not part of someone’s business plan.
It was simple, it was fun, and it was real.
